Cemetery Etiquette

I love going to cemeteries. I enjoy walking among the headstones looking for the oldest one there. I have also cleaned up some of the grounds and the headstones themselves.
This photo is from Mount Hope Cemetery, in Rochester, NY.

I used to take my small nieces to the local one by my work. We would go and see out Aunt Marge and we always took time out to go visit the children's headstones. The girls would wipe them off and talk gently to them.

When you go to a cemetery you must do a few things, 2 to be exact. These are not written rules, but they are common sense and unwritten rules of respect for those who have passed on.

Watch where you walk. Walking on the headstones is a huge no no. Totally disrespectful to the owner of that headstone. I have seen people walking on them and it's makes me cringe. Not only is it rude, but the old stones can break from the added pressure.

Clean up after yourself. When it comes to the outdoors, I'm a firm believer that you should always leave a place better than you found it. Put all of the trash in the trash receptacles. This will help the cemetery maintenance crew and make their work a lot easier.
